Cyndi Lauper's emotional acceptance speech
'I can't say I wasn't practicing in front of the shower curtain for a couple of days for this speech,' Lauper said after receiving the award for Best Original Score. 'Um, all right. I got to thank my mom for sharing all that wonderful music. I wrecked all her Broadway musicals when I was a kid, the cast albums. That's how I learned how to sing. I want to thank her for sharing the music with me. I want to thank Harvey Fierstein for calling me up. I'm so glad I was done with the dishes. I'm so excited to answer the phone. And, I want to thank Broadway for welcoming me.'
The singer won for her work with the musical, 'Kinky Boots,' which she made with Broadway veteran Harvey Fierstein. The show took home the awards for Best Musical, Best Sound Design of a Musical, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical, Best Orchestrations and Best Original Score.
The show, which led the evening with 15 nominations, is based on a 2005 film and is about a a struggling shoe factory owner who saves his family's business with the help of a drag queen. Check out a FULL LIST of WINNERS.
