14 of 14: Patti Smith, 64, is an American singer-songwriter, poet and artist who broke out with her 1975 debut album 'Horses.' She won the National Book Award in 2010 for her memoir 'Just Kids.' Smith has also been an active anti-war activist.

"In 2011 we face a new era of sweeping changes combating an even deeper cynicism and intolerance," R.E.M. lead singer Michael Stipe told Time magazine. "With 'Just Kids,' her memoir of her friendship with artist Robert Mapplethorpe, Patti reminds us that innocence, utopian ideals, beauty and revolt are enlightenment's guiding stars in the human journey. Her book recalls, without blinking or faltering, a collective memory one that guides us through the present and into the future."
