Kurt Cobain despised the mainstream and was the picture of grunge rock rebellion. MTV invited Nirvana to perform at the 1992 Video Music Awards but wanted the group to play one of its singles. While on stage, the band began to perform and sing a few notes from the controversial song 'Rape Me' before in 1992 before switching to 'Lithium,' a commercial hit.
Cobain ended the performance by trashing music equipment and calling out to his then-rival, Guns N' Roses singer Axl Rose.
