Olivia Newton - John as Sandy
Olivia Newton-John was a hit singer in Australia before she starred alongside John Travolta in 'Grease.' Her part was rewritten from the original Broadway character of American Sandy Dumbrowski to Sandy Olsson, an Australian whose family moves to the United States after vacationing in the country over the summer.
Newton-John performed the song 'Hopelessly Devoted to You' at the Academy Awards in 1979 and earned a Golden Globe nomination for her role in the film.
In 1980, Newton-John followed up her 'Grease' role with the film 'Xanadu.' Though the film only broke even at the box office, the soundtrack became a hit and was certified double platinum.
Newton-John released her most commercially successful album, 'Physical,' in 1981. The title track spent ten weeks in the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. She later teamed up with Travolta again in the 1983 movie 'Two of a Kind.'
Newton-John continued to release albums throughout the 90s and acted occasionally with roles in movies like 'It's My Party' and 'Sordid Lives.' Most recently she recreated her 'Physical' video with Jane Lynch on 'Glee.'
In 1984, she married actor Matt Lattanzi, who co-starred with her in 'Xanadu.' The two had a daughter, Chloe Rose Lattanzi in January 1986, before they divorced in 1995.
In 1992 she was diagnosed with breast cancer and eventually recovered. She later became an advocate for breast cancer research.
The singer and actress got married a second time in June 2008 to John Easterling, founder and president of Amazon Herb Company. The couple had two private weddings in Peru and Florida.
