The new ABC series 'Malibu Country,' which stars Reba McEntire, will premiere on November 2, 2012 and will air on Fridays from 8:30 to 9 p.m. ET.
This marks McEntire's return to TV full time since her sitcom 'Reba' ended its run in 2007. In 'Malibu Country,' she plays a country singer who splits from her cheating husband, also a country star, and moves her kids and mother, played by Lily Tomlin, from Nashville to posh Malibu, California.
'It's a very different beast than the old 'Reba,' Executive Producer Kevin Abbott told OnTheRedCarpet.com and other outlets at ABC's Television Critics Association panel on July 27, 2012. 'The old 'Reba' was woman gets cheated on; she has to deal with her ex husband and the mistress that he then married and how they parent together.'
'This is much more about a woman moving from Nashville to Malibu and how do you start life over when the entire culture is alien to you and just everything you kind of assume doesn't really hold true out here,' he said.
Reba struggles to embrace her new world. For example, her on-screen daughter befriends the boy next door, who is openly gay and embraces his sexuality. Sara Rue, known for roles on the shows such as 'Less Than Perfect' and 'Popular,' plays the boy's mother, a stereotypical blonde Malibu socialite.
'For this character, I watched countless hours of 'The Real Housewives of Orange County,' Rue said. 'And that is what I based my character on completely. You can really credit 'The Real Housewives of Orange County,' because that's what I do.'
