Melissa Gilbert is a former child star who played Laura on 'Little House on the Prairie.' It was confirmed on Feb. 28, 2012 that she will dance Maksim Chmerkovskiy in season 14 of 'Dancing With The Stars.'
Gilbert, 47, underwent back surgery in 2010. Doctors replaced a disc and fused a vertebra in the actress' lower spine. The actress is an avid Twitter user. As she recovered at home, she posted photos of herself on her Twitter page.
'@maksimc hi baby! Can I get a follow back,' she Tweeted on Feb. 28, 2012, after the cast was announced on the ABC show 'Good Morning America.'
Chmerkovskiy replied: 'You got it! Welcome, strap in and enjoy the ride!'
The actress began her on-screen career in the late 1960s. She played little Laura 'Half Pint' Ingalls on the television show 'Little House on the Prairie' between 1974 and 1983. She later appeared in several television films and provided the voice of Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl, in the animated series 'Batman' between 1992 and 1994.
She later appeared on shows such as 'Providence,' '7th Heaven' and 'Nip/Tuck' and played herself in an episode of actress and former 'Dancing With The Stars' cast member Kirstie Alley's mock reality show 'Fat Actress' in 2005. Gilbert had at the time served as the president of the President of Screen Actors Guild union.

In 2010, she appeared in the touring musical 'Little House on the Prairie,' playing the family's mother, Caroline 'Ma' Ingalls.
The actress is also the sister of 'Roseanne' and 'The Talk' co-host Sara Gilbert.
