37 of 186: Mel Stuart, director of the 1971 film, 'Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory' died on Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012 of cancer at his home in Beverly Hills, Calif. He was 83.

Stuart's dozens of documentary films include three editions of 'The Making of the President.' The award-winning documentary filmmaker is also known for the 1969 comedy, 'If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium.'

Stuart won one Emmy Award for 'The Making of the President' and was nominated for four other Emmy Awards for his work. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for his documentary, 'Four Days in November.'
