John Neville, a British actor who played the mysterious Well-Manicured Man on the cult sci-fi series 'The X-Files,' died on Nov. 19, 2011 at age 86 in Toronto after battling Alzheimer's disease.
He served in the Royal Navy in World War II and later began to pursue acting. He starred in numerous Shakespeare plays and began his on-screen career in the 1950s. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Caroline; three daughters, three sons and six grandchildren, the New York Times said.
He appeared on various television shows, including 'Grand' and 'Silver Surfer.' Neville played Isaac Newton on an episode of 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' and starred in the 1988 film 'The Adventures of Baron Munchausen,' which was directed by Terry Gilliam of 'Monty Python' fame.
He also appeared in the movies 'High School High' with Jon Lovitz in 1996, 'The Fifth Element' with Bruce Willis in 1997 and 'Spider' in 2002.
Neville portrayed the Well-Manicured Man on 'The X-Files' from 1995 to 1998 and reprised his role in a feature film based on the show that was released in the latter year. His character was a member of the top-secret spy organization The Syndicate, and helped main characters and FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully in their paranormal cases without his group's knowledge.
After his run on 'The X-Files,' Neville continued acting, appearing on shows such as 'Queer As Folk' and 'Friends and Heroes' in 2007. Neville's last on-screen role came in 2010, when he portrayed the narrator in a short called 'Dance of Death.'
The actor moved from his native England to Canada in the early 1970s. He was was awarded the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1965 and was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 2006. Organizers of Canada's Stratford Shakespeare Festival Neville announced his death, the New York Times said. He served as the artistic director of the event in the late 1980s.
