Ruben Studdard, known as the 'Velvet Teddy Bear' and for sporting shirts with the '205' area code from his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama, was crowned the winner of the second season of 'American Idol' in 2003.
Following his run on the show, Studdard released his debut solo record titled 'Soulful,' which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart and spawned the hit single 'Sorry 2004.' In addition to 'Soulful,' Studdard has released five studio albums, including 'I Need an Angel' in 2004, 'The Return' in 2006, 'Love Is' in 2009 and 'Letters from Birmingham' in 2012.
Studdard filed for divorce from his wife Surata Zuri McCants in November 2011 after three years of marriage, telling Wendy Williams in a March 2012 interview that the pair 'were just going in two separate directions.' In July 2013, it was announced that Studdard would compete on the NBC weight loss series 'The Biggest Loser' when it premieres in the fall, telling PEOPLE, 'I was losing weight, but I was exhausted. It was making me sick. I'm a big man. There was no way to do those workouts on that amount of food, so everything was contradicting itself."
