Robin Roberts' ailment
On June 11, Roberts announced on 'Good Morning America' that she has been diagnosed with a bone marrow and blood disorder called myelodysplastic syndrome, also called MDS.
The 51-year-old 'Good Morning America' anchor said that she was starting chemotherapy and that she would be required to get a bone marrow transplant in the summer or fall. Roberts said that her older sister Sally Ann Roberts, who is also is also a broadcast journalist - she works as an anchor for New Orleans TV station WWL-TV, was a 'virtually perfect match' and would be the donor.
Roberts was treated for breast cancer five years ago and she said it was that treatment which contributed to her current diagnosis.
In August, Roberts faced more tragic news when her mother Lucimarian died, after the television personality announced she would begin a scheduled medical leave a day early so she could travel to Mississippi to be with her.
Robin made it back in time to be with Lucimarian Tolliver Roberts at the time of death. She passed away on Thursday at age 88. The cause of her death was not revealed.
In September, the co-anchor underwent her scheduled bone marrow transplant, which was a five-minute procedure to help treat the MDS.
In October, Roberts gave fans an update on her health following the transplant on her blog, also detailing her difficulties with chemotherapy and how her co-workers' visit helped lift her spirits.
'Today is what I like to call 'Thankful Thursday, aka Friday Eve,'' Roberts wrote in a post on Thursday, October 4. 'I have been in the hospital 25 days now. My bone marrow transplant took place exactly two weeks ago. The only numbers that matter are my blood counts and they are... GREAT! My sister Sally-Ann's stem cells apparently feel right at home in my body -- an answer to so many prayers.'
In December, Sam Champion, the weather anchor for 'GMA' married his boyfriend Rubem Robierb - and his colleague Roberts was present.
The two exchanged vows at Champion's apartment in Manhattan on Friday, December 21. In addition to Roberts, the guests included 'GMA' correspondents Lara Spencer and Josh Elliott, as seen in a photo released by ABC (pictured above), as well as several members of the couple's friends and family. Robierb's mother and sisters watched via Skype from Brazil, ABC News reported.
