8 of 10:
Mel Gibson is No. 8 on on the list of least trusted personalities in the United States, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, whose results were released in August 2011.
About 45 percent of people rated the actor below average in terms of being someone they trust.
Gibson first caused controversy after insulting Jews during a 2006 drunken driving arrest. He later apologized and pleaded no contest to the charge. He was sentenced to three years probation and underwent alcohol rehabilitation.
'Please know from my heart that I am not an anti-Semite,' he said in a statement at the time. 'I am not a bigot. Hatred of any kind goes against my faith.'
In December 2010, actress Winona Ryder, who is Jewish, says that Gibson once made an anti-Semitic comment and told a 'really horrible gay joke' in front of her while drunk. The actor has not responded to her remarks.
The previous summer, Gibson made headlines over a recorded racist, sexist and explicit rant he is said to have made against his ex-girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, the mother of his eighth child, daughter Lucia. Gibson has seven children from a previous marriage.
He and Grigorieva split in April 2010 and became involved in a child custody dispute. After a January confrontation, she accused him of domestic violence. Gibson pleaded guilty in March 2011 to charges of misdemeanor battery against Grigorieva and was given probation. She later dropped her domestic violence claim.
