Paris Hilton is No. 1 on the list of least trusted personalities in the United States, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, whose results were released in August 2011.
Among a national sample of 2,012 adults aged 18 and older, about 67 percent of people rated Paris Hilton below average in terms of being someone they trust.
Hilton, a Los Angeles socialite, hotel heiress and owner of more than 20 pets, rose to fame with the reality series 'The Simple Life,' which aired between 2003 and 2007 and also starred Nicole Richie and their chihuahuas. During their time on the show, Hilton often uttering the phrase, 'That's hot,' and spoke with a baby voice. Hilton has said that she was 'playing a character' on the series.
Hilton was also known at the time for a sex tape with then-boyfriend Rick Salomon, which had been posted online just before the show premiered.
Hilton later made headlines due to her legal troubles. In August 2010, she was arrested in Las Vegas after police found in her purse a bag containing 0.8 of a gram of cocaine. She told them she thought it was chewing gum.
Hilton later pleaded guilty to drug possession and obstructing an officer. She was sentenced to one year of probation and ordered to complete a drug abuse program, pay a $2,000 fine and serve 200 hours of community service.
In July 2011, Hilton was held by police on the French island of Corsica for possession of marijuana. It was less than a gram in her purse and police soon released her without pressing charges. Also that month, Hilton was detained in South Africa for marijuana possession at the World Cup. She was later cleared of those charges.
Hilton continued to star in reality shows after 'The Simple Life' ended. She headed the programs 'Paris Hilton's My New BFF' and 'Paris Hilton's British Best Friend,' which ran in 2009, and 'The World According To Paris,' which debuted in 2011.
Despite her attempt at showing what she said was the 'real' Paris Hilton, the show's ratings were weak. Hilton was asked about it on the ABC show 'Good Morning America' in July 2011. After being posed with the question, 'Do you ever worry about your moment having passed,' Hilton walked off the set.
Regardless of her on and off-screen turmoil, Hilton continues to maintain a loyal fanbase online. She also has stalkers. One of them, a man named James Rainford, has also been jailed for assaulting Hilton's then-boyfriend in front of her and has been detained after being spotted outside Hilton homes. He pleaded not guilty for a July 4, 2011 incident and as of August 18, 2011, his trial is pending.
