Zsa Zsa Gabor's daughter, Francesca Hilton, battles von Anhalt over conservatorship
Francesca Hilton, the daughter of ailing Hollywood icon Zsa Zsa Gabor, wants the actress' husband, Frederic Prinz Von Anhalt, to stop controlling her mother's financial needs and medical care.
Gabor turned 95 last month. Von Anhalt, 68, threw her a lavish birthday party at their mansion in Bel-Air, California. The actress, who cannot walk or eat solid food, remained behind closed doors and did not appear before the scores of journalists who were invited to the event. Gabor's daughter was also a no-show.
The 65-year-old, a Los Angeles comedienne whose official first name is Constance, has squabbled with Von Anhalt for decades and has at times insulted him on stage at her stand-up comedy shows. On Tuesday, her attorney filed a claim at a city court requesting that an independent conservator handle Gabor's affairs, rather than Von Anhalt. A hearing is set for May 2.
"We are just seeking to bring her finances and healthcare out in the open, so to speak, within the confines of a conservatorship proceeding, so that independent third parties will determine that she is getting the best care she can," the lawyer told OnTheRedCarpet.com's parent company, KABC Television.
Hilton visited her mother in the hospital during her treatments and at her home. She says Von Anhalt restricts their communication and that Gabor seemed "heavily sedated" at the house, adding that a visitor saw the remnants of bedsores. Von Anhalt rejects her claims.
Von Anhalt told reporters on Tuesday that he and Gabor are in debt. Their home was listed for sale in June 2011 for $15 million. The property was taken off the market earlier this month. The estimated value of the home is currently less than $4 million, according to real estate reports.
The property, which was originally purchased in Gabor's name, is in default and $85,000 is owed on the mortgage. Franscesca Hilton says Von Anhalt had borrowed $700,000 to pay for it, which he admits, but says she is to blame for the default because she refinanced the home loan several years ago.
He says he still plans to sell the house to pay off his wife's debts, adding that he cannot afford his monthly payments, which total $30,000, and that his wife's monthly income is 6,000.
Gabor, a Hungarian native, is seen by many as a symbol of European glamour and wealth and is known for her reported nine marriages, including to Franchesca Hilton's father, Conrad Hilton. She has no other children.
Gabor has been in and out of the hospital since she broke her hip in July 2010. Gabor, who has not been able to walk for at least 10 years, had part of her leg amputated in January 2011. The most recent picture of her was released in June 2011. She was photographed on a bed in her home at von Anhalt's birthday party.
Her 95th birthday celebration took place on February 6.
"She doesn't get healthier ... as long as she doesn't get worse," Von Anhalt said at the party. "If it stays for the next five years like that, we are fine ... She wants to live."
