Zsa Zsa Gabor not seen at 95th birthday party, Frederic Prinz von Anhalt talks 100th (Video)
Zsa Zsa Gabor recently turned 95 and was a no-show at her lavish party, but her husband Frederic Prinz von Anhalt says the ailing actress "smiled" when he told her about it and that he already is looking forward to celebrating her 100th birthday.
The Hungarian-born Hollywood socialite has been in and out of the hospital since she broke her hip by falling off her bed while watching "Jeopardy!" in July 2010. Gabor, who has not been able to walk for at least 10 years, had part of her leg amputated in January 2011.
She was not seen in person at her birthday party, which took place on Monday, February 6, at her and her husband's Bel-Air home. The event included champagne, dishes such as schnitzel and a four-tier birthday cake topped with icing, candy and strawberries. The phrase "Zz [heart] Zz" was written on each layer.
"I told her, 'It's a party, we got about 100 people,' and she smiled," von Anhalt, 68, told OnTheRedCarpet.com and other press outlets about Gabor. "She wants it. I want her to feel that we have lots of people here. This is her day today, it's her birthday and it's the 95th birthday and next year, we go on and on and on and when she celebrates her 100th birthday, then it's going to be huge. Bigger, bigger than life. I'm going to invite everybody."
Von Anhalt placed and lit nine candles on another, smaller cake, which was covered with chocolate chips. The dish was made by Wolfgang Puck.
"My wife is going to have the first piece," he said, carrying the cake and walking across the hallway. "The first slice."
He later said Gabor "smiled and she touched the cake."
"Unfortunately, she can't eat it," he added. "She can only eat ice cream or soft things, other things like that. But she's very happy. She's excited - it's her birthday. We don't talk about '95' or whatever, it's just a birthday and we go on and on and on."
Gabor is seen by many as a symbol of European glamour and wealth and is known for her reported nine marriages, including to Paris Hilton's great-grandfather, Conrad, who is the father of Gabor's only child, Francesca, a comedienne.
Gabor was also known for throwing and attending star-studded parties.
"We celebrate every year," von Anhalt said. "She wants me to celebrate it because that's what she did all the time. She always celebrated, she made big parties, (wore a) beautiful evening gown, her hair beautifully done. She wanted to show off, she wanted me to show off."
Von Anhalt and Gabor married in 1986. Von Anhalt has shown his affection for her in lavish ways before. Last July, he paid a reported $68,000 for a billboard as a 25th anniversary gift. It read "Prince Frederic & Princess Zsa Zsa, 25 years and counting" and was displayed over Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles for about a month. He also threw her an anniversary party at their home. She was not seen in person.
Gabor was, however, seen publicly in June 2011, when her and her husband's spokesperson released photographs of her holding a glass of champagne while lying on a medical bed in a room at their home while celebrating von Anhalt's birthday.
Gabor's husband said on Monday that his wife's health remains unchanged.
"She doesn't get healthier & as long as she doesn't get worse," he said. "That's all that counts. It doesn't get worse, it's fine. If it stays for the next five years like that, we are fine and I hope it's going to be like that. I have the energy, I have the willpower. I'm her husband, I look after her and she trusts me. She wants to live. She sees me, she feels me, she wants to go on and I want to go on."
