Zooey Deschanel and Ben Gibbard finalize divorce

12/17/2012 by Nichole Hamilton

It's officially over for Zooey Deschanel and musician Ben Gibbard.

The pair, who married in September 2009, are officially divorced as of December 12 according to court documents filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court.

According to the documents, "unhappy and irreconcilable differences have arisen between the parties, which have caused the irremediable breakdown of their marriage. There is no possibility that counseling...or mediation could save the marriage," according to People magazine.

Deschanel, 32, and Gibbard, the 36-year-old singer of the rock band Death Cab for Cutie, separated late last year after more than two years of marriage.

The actress filed divorce papers at a Los Angeles court on Dec. 27, 2011 and listed October 31 - Halloween - as the date she and Gibbard separated. The pair share no children.

This was the first marriage for Deschanel, who stars in the FOX sitcom "New Girl." Her role earned her a Golden Globe nomination in 2012. She is also known for films such as "Yes Man," "Almost Famous," the R-rated fantasy comedy "Your Highness" and the 2009 romance drama "(500) Days of Summer."

Deschanel is also a singer - the actress is a member of the indie rock band She & Him.

Gibbard's musical endeavors include his work with bands The Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie, the latter of the two earning the performer two Grammy nominations in 2006 and 2007.
