Zach Galifianakis talks 'Campaign,' his 6th grade political run (Video)

08/10/2012 by Nichole Hamilton

Zach Galifianakis, who is set to star in the upcoming political comedy "The Campaign," talked to OnTheRedCarpet.com about his real-life childhood experience running for student council.

"I ran for student council president in 6th grade," Galifianakis joked with OnTheRedCarpet.com's George Pennacchio. "But my opponent passed out candy - guess who won."

The 42-year-old actor, known for films such as "The Hangover" and "Due Date," is set to star in the upcoming film alongside funny man Will Ferrell. In the film, two CEOs seize the opportunity to oust long-term congressman Cam Brady, played by Ferrell, by putting up an opposing candidate. Their man: naive Marty Huggins, played by Galifianakis, who is the director of the local Tourism Center.

Galifianakis' went on to talk about his character's unique personality, and where he got the inspiration for the lovable Marty Huggins.

"It's a character I've been doing since high school," he said. "Since he was running for office, I knew there had to be some kind of likeability about him. And also he's kind of a fish out of water and there are all these alpha males around him, and he's just a sweet, sweet guy. Now, today, you see people entering political office that come out of nowhere that they're not that bright - the guy is kind of based on these people that you see running for congress or senate, that want to do good, but they're not necessarily qualified."

Galifianakis is known for his stand-up comedy career and his roles in films like "The Hangover," "Puss in Boots" and "Dinner for Schmucks."
