'Wreck-It Ralph' tops weekend box office with $49.1 million
"Wreck-It Ralph" finished its debut weekend at the top of the box office.
The computer animated film featuring the voices of John C. Reilly, "Glee" star Jane Lynch, Sarah Silverman and "30 Rock" actor Jack McBrayer, earned an estimated $49.1 million over the weekend, according to The Associated Press.
Reilly stars in the film as Ralph from a fictional video game called Wreck-It Ralph. Ralph is the villain in his game world with Fix-It Felix Jr. (voiced by McBrayer) as the hero. Tired of being the bad guy, Ralph leaves his game world to venture to other games to try to become a hero.
In second place for the weekend is the Denzel Washington drama "Flight," which earned an estimated $25 million. The movie was directed by Robert Zemeckis and marked his first live-action film in 12 years. Previously, the director focused on performance-capture animated films like "The Polar Express" and "A Christmas Carol."
In "Flight," Washington's character, Whip Whitaker, becomes somewhat of a hero at first when he executes an emergency landing of his commercial jet but quickly falls from grace when his substance abuse is revealed following an investigation into what could have become a massive tragedy.
"Argo" landed in third place for the weekend after capturing the box office crown last week. The Ben Affleck film, which he starred and directed in, earned an addition $10.2 million for its fourth weekend in release. The film's domestic total now stands at an estimated $75.9 million.
In fourth place is the kung fu movie "The Man With the Iron Fists." The movie was directed by Wu-Tang Clan member RZA and starred Lucy Liu and Russell Crowe. "The Man With the Iron Fists" opened with $8.2 million.
Finishing out the top five and still earning well is the action film "Taken 2" was has been in theaters for five weeks. The movie earned an addition $6 million this weekend and its domestic total is now $125.6 million.
