William Shatner records 'Star Trek' message for Discovery crew - listen

03/07/2011 by Corinne Heller

William Shatner of "Star Trek" fame recently took part in a wake-up call for crew members of the space shuttle Discovery as the astronauts began their trip back to Earth.

On Monday morning, the crew undocked from the International Space Station for the last time and the theme song of the original 1960s "Star Trek" series was played for them. However, instead of the regular monologue that is heard at the end of it, a recorded message of Shatner spoofing the famous words of his character, Captain James T. Kirk, was played instead.

"Space, the final frontier," the actor said. "These have been the voyages of the Space Shuttle Discovery. Her 30-year mission: To seek out new science. To build new outposts. To bring nations together on the final frontier. To boldly go, and do, what no spacecraft has done before."

The "Star Trek" theme, by Alexander Courage, received the second most public votes from a Top 40 list in a Space Shuttle Program-sponsored song contest, NASA said in a statement. The winning song, "Blue Sky" by Big Head Todd and the Monsters, will be played during Tuesday's wake-up call.

" Discovery was the first space shuttle to dock to the International Space Station, during the STS-96 mission in 1999, marking just one time it did what no spacecraft had done before," NASA said in a statement. "

Shatner played Kirk on the original "Star Trek" series from 1966 to 1974 and reprised his role in movies based on the hit science fiction franchise, beginning in 1979 with "Star Trek: The Motion Picture." He later went on to star in shows such as "Boston Legal" and current appears on the comedy series "$#*! My Dad Says."

The space shuttle Discovery and its six-member crew of American astronauts are set to end their 13-day trip and land at Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 11:58 a.m. on Wednesday, March 9.
