Vanessa Hudgens: Dwayne Johnson has 'mad skills' on ukulele (Video)

02/10/2012 by Nichole Hamilton

For Vanessa Hudgens, filming a movie in Hawaii has its perks - especially when your co-star provides musical entertainment.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is known for his roles in action-packed films, such as "The Scorpion King" and "Fast Five." In the family adventure movie "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island," which was released on Friday, February 10, the actor and wrestling star also showcases his mellower side.

"Dwayne was busy practicing his ukulele, which was equally as enjoyable [as Hawaii]," Hudgens told OnTheRedCarpet.com host Chris Balish, regarding the filming process. "He has mad skills and he shows it in this movie. He has a beautiful voice that he gets to showcase as well."

Johnson can be seen playing the string instrument and singing "What A Wonderful World" in this video posted on his YouTube page. The actor was born in California but grew up in Hawaii. Hudgens says she thoroughly enjoyed filming the movie in paradise.

"My favorite spot, possibly in the whole world," Hudgens said. "It [Hawaii] was just so stunningly beautiful. It's so massive, these valleys, that it makes you feel so small and humbled and it's just the most serene thing ever... I was in heaven."

In "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island," Sean Anderson, played byJosh Hutcherson, partners with his mom's new man, portrayed by Johnson, on a mission to find his grandfather, who is thought to be missing on a mythical island. Hudgens appears in the film as Hutcherson's love interest, while Kristin Davis of "Sex and the City" fame portrays his mother.

Hudgens said things on the island are "all backwards."

"Giant lizards, big spiders, massive birds, riding big bees," Hudgens said. "Things that are normally small would be big and things that are normally big would be small, so it's all backwards and a bit crazy and fun."

Hudgens made her comments at the recent Los Angeles premiere for the film. At the event, she wore a yellow, strapless Maria Lucia Hohan gown with stackable Le Vian diamond bangles (See more photos of Hudgens and others at the "Journey 2" premiere).

The two dated in real life, in early 2011. The pair faced an awkward situation when they were asked about their relationship in a January interview with the Australian show "Today." Hutcherson responded by saying that they were dating at one point, but are now "really good friends."

Hudgens has more recently been linked to "Switched at Birth" actor Austin Butler, 20, who has appeared on TV series' like "Life Unexpected," "Zoey 101" and "Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide."

Hudgens rose to fame playing the female lead in the Disney Channel's "High School Musical" movie series, which marked her breakout role, and has also starred in films such as "Beastly" and "Sucker Punch."

Hudgens also recently filmed the 2012 film "Gimme Shelter," which sees her playing a troubled, pregnant teenager. The actress was last year a spokesmodel for Candie's apparel (see photos), which is affiliated with the Candie's Foundation, a non-profit group that aims to "educate America's youth about the devastating consequences of teenage pregnancy."
