Van Halen releases 'Tattoo' single, music video before tour with David Lee Roth (Video, Poll)
Van Halen has released a new song and music video, "Tattoo," ahead of its anticipated reunion tour and album with David Lee Roth.
The black and white clip shows Roth, 57, dancing on stage in his signature "Diamond Dave" style. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen, drummer Alex Van Halen and bassist Wolfgang Van Halen rock out as balloons and streamers fly around them.
The song is the first recorded with Roth in more than 15 years. He also penned its lyrics, which contain lines such as "Swap meet Sally / Tramp stamp tat / Mousewife to momshell in the time it took to get that new tattoo."
The video for "Tattoo" was released on Tuesday, January 10, four days before tickets for the rock band's upcoming 2012 tour are set to go on sale for the general public. The concert series begins on February 18 in Kentucky.
A link to the clip was posted on Van Halen's Facebook page, earning at least 2,600 comments. Reactions from fans were mixed.
"Awful," said user Terry Rainey. "Very disappointed. I waited 28 years for this and was very let down. It reminds me of a filler song not a first release. You know the song they write to make enough songs to complete a full album."
Mo Slutzky called the track "garbage," adding: "Good thing I didn't get my hopes up."
Paul Counelis said the single was "catchy and accessible."
"Like Roth's swagger and melody on the bridge, it's classic Roth," he said. "Great solo. Hope the overall record is heavier, though."
"Tattoo" is featured on Van Halen's upcoming album, "A Different Kind of Truth," which is set to hit stores on February 7. It marks the band's first record with Roth since the release of "1984," which features the hit singles "Jump," "Panama" and "Hot for Teacher."
Last week, Van Halen performed a small concert before about 250 people at New York's City's Cafe Wha?.
Rumors of a Van Halen reunion began around November after Roth and the Van Halen musicians appeared at the Roxy Theatre and posed for photos with executives from Interscope Records.
On December 26, three videos of the singer performing on a stage with Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, and Wolfgang Van Halen were posted on the group's website. A message announced a 2012 tour.
Roth became Van Halen's lead singer after the band formed in the early 1970s. Around 1985, the group broke up and Roth concentrated on a solo career. Van Halen then recruited Sammy Hagar as its lead singer and he helped the band score hits such as "Dreams" and "Why Can't This Be Love."
Hagar left the group in 1996. That year, the Van Halen brothers reunited with Roth and recorded new music with him. He sings in the tracks "Me Wise Magic" and "Can't Get This Stuff No More," which are featured on the group's 1996 compilation album "Best of Volume 1."
Van Halen ultimately parted ways with Roth again, later introducing Gary Cherone of the group Extreme as the new lead singer of Van Halen. The group never achieved the kind of success it enjoyed in the 1980s.
In 2004, the band reunited with Hagar for a record and a tour. Hagar left again a year later and formed the supergroup Chickenfoot with bassist Michael Anthony. Wolfgang Van Halen then replaced him.
In 2007, Van Halen reunited with David Lee Roth and was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame.
The group also embarked on a tour that ended in June 2008. Several dates were postponed after Eddie Van Halen, 56, entered rehab for unspecified reasons. The guitarist had throughout the years battled several medical ailments. He underwent hip replacement surgery in 1999 and had part of his tongue removed in 2001 to treat a cancerous growth.
