Van Halen is starting 2012 off with a bang!

Just a bit more than a week after the rock group announced a reunion tour with original singer David Lee Roth, "Diamond Dave" himself and musicians Eddie, Wolfgang and Alex Van Halen performed a small concert before about 250 people at New York's City's Cafe Wha?, which was once owned by the singer's 92-year-old uncle Manny Roth, who sold it in 1988. The gig took place on Thursday, January 5 (see video below).

The band revealed the dates for its tour, which kicks off on February 18 in Louisville, KY. The funk/soul group Kool & the Gang will open for Van Halen at several concerts. Tickets are set to go on sale on January 14 at Ticketmaster.com and LiveNation.com.

Van Halen also announced more news about the group's anticipated new album - it is called "A Different Kind of Truth" and is set to be released on February 7. It is Van Halen's first major record featuring Roth since the release of the band's hit record "1984," which features the hit singles "Jump," "Panama" and "Hot for Teacher."

At Cafe Wha? gig, Van Halen performed those tracks as well as the new song "She's The Woman," according to a set list posted by Billboard.com and the Van Halen News Desk.

"Man of man, it's a lot of folks I kinda grew up with here," Roth, dressed in denim overalls and a cap, said at the gig, as seen in a fan-made video. "Which one of you guys from the press knows Lady Gaga? I gotta meet her. I was watching 'New Year's [Rockin'] Eve,' I saw the picture of [Mayor Michael] Bloomberg with Gaga and she had the mask and everything. It was a perfect picture for New York City on New Year's Eve, man, New Year's Eve."

Roth "sounded good! In my opinion he has sung better than ever live last 4 years," veteran rock radio DJ Eddie Trunk, who attended the concert and has a show on Sirius XM, said on his Twitter page.

"It was mostly media and industry, only invited guests, so they let people do what they wanted and had an open bar," he added. "Treated everyone great. It was surreal to be standing literally 10 feet away as EVH played some of the greatest rock songs ever. Just crazy."

"She's The Woman" was recorded as a demo in the 70s and "will presumably appear on 'A Different Kind of Truth,'" Billboard.com reported. Another new Van Halen single, "Tattoo," is set to be released on Tuesday, January 10, along with a music video, Livenation said in a statement obtained by OnTheRedCarpet.com.

REUNION RUMORS

Rumors of a Van Halen reunion began around November after Roth and the Van Halen musicians appeared at the Roxy Theatre and posed for photos with executives from Interscope Records.

On December 26, three videos of the singer performing on a stage with Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, and Wolfgang Van Halen were posted on the group's website. A message announced a 2012 tour.

The footage was shot at the Roxy Theatre, a popular club in Los Angeles' Sunset Strip area that boasts several music venues where famous musicians launched their careers.

"For the past 2 months VAN HALEN has been rehearsing here 2-3 times a week!!!!!!" said a message on the club's website on Thursday, December 29. "Do you have any idea how hard that was to not tell you??"

Roth, 57, became Van Halen's lead singer after the band formed in the early 1970s. Around 1985, the group broke up and Roth concentrated on a solo career. Sammy Hagar replaced him and helped the band score hits such as "Dreams" and "Why Can't This Be Love."

Hagar left the group in 1996. That year, the Van Halen brothers reunited with Roth on stage at the MTV Movie Awards. They ultimately parted ways with him again, later introducing Gary Cherone of the group Extreme as the new lead singer of Van Halen. The group never achieved the kind of success it enjoyed in the 1980s.

In 2004, the band reunited with Hagar for a record and a tour. Hagar left again a year later and formed the supergroup Chickenfoot with bassist Michael Anthony. Wolfgang Van Halen then replaced him.

In 2007, Van Halen reunited with David Lee Roth and was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame.

The group also embarked on a tour that ended in June 2008. Several dates were postponed after Eddie Van Halen, 56, entered rehab for unspecified reasons. The guitarist had throughout the years battled several medical ailments. He underwent hip replacement surgery in 1999 and had part of his tongue removed in 2001 to treat a cancerous growth.
