Usher wins $12,000 bid for puppy auctioned at charity gala
Usher took home a new friend at the Pencils of Promise charity gala on Thursday night.
The 33-year-old R&B singer had the winning bid of $12,000 for a goldendoodle puppy at the event in New York City on October 25. He beat out fellow attendee, "Gossip Girl" actress Jessica Szohr, who bid $11,000.
The winning bid will go towards the charity's efforts to build schools in Laos, Nicaragua, Guatemala and Ghana. Since being founded in October 2008, the organization has built more than 50 schools, offering hope to some of the 75 million children in the world who don't have access to an education.
The organization was founded by Adam Braun, the brother of Justin Bieber's manager Scooter Braun, who also attended the event. Usher was one of the honorees at the second annual gala.
According to People magazine, Usher bid on a puppy at last year's charity auction, but was outbid. The family who took home that puppy reportedly named it Usher.
"All in the name of feline fun! It took me 2 years but I outbid everyone this year to bring Poppy home to Ush," Usher Tweeted after the event.
Though he hasn't decided on a name, Usher said the choice would eventually go to his sons - 4-year-old Usher Raymond V and 3-year-old Naviyd Ely. In August, Usher was awarded primary custody of the boys, following a lengthy legal battle with ex-wife Tameka Foster Raymond.
"Poppy (????) Raymond is what I'm think of namin' her...however there are two gregarious 3 and 4 year olds that will have the last say...and the responsibility that comes wit her," Usher wrote on his official Instagram account.
It was announced on September 17 that Usher and Shakira would be replacing Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green on "The Voice," as the mentors would be taking time off from the reality series for its upcoming fourth season. Shakira and Usher will appear alongside Adam Levine and Blake Shelton. The third season of the reality singing competition premiered on September 10.
Usher signed his first recording contract when he was 14 years old, with "X-Factor" judge L.A. Reid. His debut album was released in 1994 and featured co-executive producer Sean "Puffy" Combs. The seven-time Grammy-winner has put out seven albums in total, including his most recent release, "Looking 4 Myself," which debuted in June.
Usher is slated to take on the role of Sugar Ray Leonard in the upcoming film "Hands of Stone," about boxer Roberto "Hands of Stone" Duran (Gael Garcia Bernal).
