Usher granted primary custody of two sons with ex-wife

08/24/2012 by Olivia Allin

Usher was granted primary custody of his two sons after a lengthy legal battle with ex-wife Tameka Foster Raymond.

The 33-year-old R&B singer and Tameka have been involved in a bitter custody dispute over their two sons, 4-year-old Usher Raymond V and 3-year-old Naviyd Ely.

Atlanta's Fulton County Court Clerk's office spokeswoman Cherrise Boone told the Associated Press that a judge ruled on August 24 that Usher would have primary custody, set to begin on September 1.

Usher and Foster will share joint legal custody of the young boys, but it is unclear how often Foster will be able to see her youngest sons.

Following the announcement of the court's decision, Foster wrote on Twitter, "Money can buy many things... But in the end. Truth & goodness will prevail. I must continue to believe this. Stand firm."

On July 21, in the midst of their custody battle, Foster's 11-year-old son Kile Glover died after being taken off life support, following a Jet Ski accident near Atlanta, Georgia on July 6.

41-year-old Foster has two other sons, Darren, who was born during her teenage years and 12-year-old Ryan Glover, who was born during her first marriage to Atlanta clothier Ryan Glover. Foster and Glover were married from 2002 until their divorce in 2007.

Usher filed for divorce in June 2009, claiming that the couple had lived separately for nearly a year of their two year marriage.

During the early court proceedings, Foster accused Usher of sleeping with one of her bridesmaids during their marriage. Usher's lawyer immediately objected to the questioning. He also objected when his client was questioned about his alleged ecstasy use, though Usher admitted in court to smoking marijuana in the past.

Meanwhile, Usher accused Foster of being inattentive, irresponsible and violent. On May 22, Usher broke down in tears while testifying that Tameka spit at and tried to fight his girlfriend. He also said that she hit him during the nasty fight, but he did not press charges because "I didn't want the boys to know that their father put their mother in jail."

Usher signed his first recording contract when he was 14 years old, with "X-Factor" judge L.A. Reid. His debut album was released in 1994 and featured co-executive producer Sean "Puffy" Combs. The seven-time Grammy-winner has put out seven albums in total, including his upcoming release, "Looking 4 Myself," which debuted in June.

Usher is slated to take on the role of Sugar Ray Leonard in the upcoming film "Hands of Stone," about boxer Roberto "Hands of Stone" Duran (Gael Garcia Bernal), which is currently filming in Panama and New York.
