Uggie from 'The Artist' gets paw print ceremony at Grauman's Chinese Theatre

Uggie of "The Artist" has joined the likes of Johnny Depp, John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe. All of the stars have their hand and foot -- or in Uggie's case paw -- prints at Grauman's Chinese Theatre.

The dog celebrated his retirement from acting with a paw print ceremony at Grauman's Chinese Theatre on June 25. During the ceremony, Councilman Tom LaBonge declared it "Uggie Day" in Los Angeles.

The 10-year-old Jack Russell terrier is retiring from acting but will continue to make appearances at charity events. His trainer, Omar von Mueller, told OnTheRedCarpet.com in February that he did not want to put Uggie through long hours anymore because of the dog's old age.

"He's an old man. I mean, in human years he's about 70," von Mueller said about Uggie in February. "So little things here and there but definitely long movies are out of the question."

At the paw print ceremony, Von Muller encouraged the crowd to adopt animals because dogs like Uggie, who was adopted, need a chance.

"He's adopted. He made it. If you guys can adopt a dog, even if they don't make it on the big screen, they'll be big stars at your house," Von Mueller said.

Uggie's other film credits include "Mr. Fix It" and "Water for Elephants" with Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson. At the event, Uggie was joined by other famous dogs Lassie and Rin Tin Tin. Uggie is the first dog to be showcased at Grauman's courtyard. Meanwhile, Lassie, Rin Tin Tin and Strongheart - have stars on the nearby Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The event was, in part, to promote the DVD and Blu-Ray release of "The Artist," which hits stores on June 26. The film won five Oscars at the Academy Awards earlier this year, including the best picture.
