'True Blood's Stephen Moyer joins 3 stars in Brooke Shields' 'Chicago'
"True Blood" star Stephen Moyer is going to have to brush up on his tap dancing skills.
The 43-year-old actor will be playing Billy Flynn in the Hollywood Bowl production of "Chicago," it was announced on Friday, June 21. The production will be directed by Brooke Shields, who has appeared in "Chicago" on Broadway and at London's West End, and will have three performances on July 26, 27 and 28.
"Les Miserables" actress Samantha Barks, Drew Carey and Lucy Lawless have also been announced as part of the cast. Barks will play Velma Kelly, a role that was played by Catherine Zeta-Jones in the 2002 film adaptation of the musical. Lawless will play Matron "Mama" Morton, the corrupt matron of Cook County Jail. Carey will play Amos, the naive husband of Roxie Hart.
Casting for the role of Roxie Hart will be announced at a later date.
Barks has stage experience and played Eponine in the 25th anniversary concert of "Les Miserables" in London in October 2010. She reprised the role in the 2012 film. Carrey currently hosts "The Price Is Right" and previously appeared in the Hollywood Bowl production of "Hairspray" as Wilbur Turnblad. Lawless, who is known for roles in "Xena: Warrior Princess," "Battlestar Galactica" and "Spartacus," appeared in the Broadway revival of "Grease."
Moyer also has theater experience as the actor worked with the National Theatre of Wales, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Oxford Stage Company and the Young Vic before moving to TV and films.
The Hollywood Bowl production of "Chicago" marks Shields' debut as a director.
"I have a great feeling about this entire cast," Shields said in a statement. "I am excited for everyone to see how brilliant Samantha Barks is on stage. We've seen Stephen Moyer sing on 'True Blood' -- and that dark, sexy side of Billy will be well served by him. Drew played the Dad in 'Hairspray' at the Bowl two years ago, and he will bring not only comedy but depth to our Amos. I wouldn't say no to anything Lucy Lawless ordered me to do ... as "Mama" or in life!! And let's not forget the most exciting character ... the Bowl itself!"
