'True Blood's Kristin Bauer van Straten: 9 questions
Kristin Bauer van Straten recently spoke to OnTheRedCarpet.com about HBO's "True Blood," seeing Alexander Skarsgard naked, her vampire character Pam De Beaufort's new "ball and chain" relationship, the moment that made her cry and also about her future on another series she popped up on - ABC's "Once Upon A Time."
The series is currently on its fifth season and a sixth has been ordered. Check out the actress' interview below. Spoiler alert!
1. How Bauer Van Straten describes her "True Blood" character..
"Pam is a vampire and she is a very unapologetic, blunt, fashionista vampire and there's some shenanigans on 'True Blood.' She's having quite a year. She made a vampire this year.
2. What she thinks marks the most significant evolution for Pam...
"All we knew about Pam in the beginning is that she seemed to be loyal to her maker and that she was very caustic and that she was really unapologetic about being a vampire which is really fun to play. So then we started to see if she had a vulnerable side, which was amazing, that that was possible coming from that character."
3. On what we'll see from Pam's past...
"This year, we've come full circle to see why Eric is so important to her, who she was as a human. 'Cause you couldn't even really imagine her ever having been human. And also then we're seeing what's going to become of her possibly tiny maternal side with her own progeny."
4. On being released from her maker Eric's power...
"I cried when I read it. I cried at the table read. I cried in rehearsal, when the camera was on my back. They kept saying, 'Kristen, you should save it.' I'm like, 'I can't.' I didn't really even feel like I was having to act. I just for some unexplainable reason, really, it was so emotional to me and to Pam, so that makes your day easy, acting-wise."
"I think it's partly due to the slow build, how on HBO and 'True Blood,' on their shows, you get these incredible arcs that can happen over seasons and certainly over a season, but our relationship has developed over five years and also I think it doesn't hurt that Alex [Skarsgard] and I really like each other. So we have a real trust and a bond."
"We've been together over 100 years. I mean, I'm in my longest relationship and that's three and a half. For Hollywood, that's pretty good, right?"
NOTE: Bauer van Straten married South African singer Abri Van Straten in 2009.
5. On Pam's new relationship with Tara, who she had turned into a vampire at Sookie's request in order to save her life.
"It's been fun playing with Rutina Wesley. I spent all last year trying to kill Tara and now I'm responsible for her so it's a fascinating thing to play for us. It's really fun because we're very similar, Tara and Pam. Very strong, very unapologetic, very ball-sy women. Two of the strongest women on the show."
"I'm fascinated to know if and when these two people unite forces, what will happen because what we play with so much of season 5 because we have our hands full with Authority shenanigans, they're wreaking havoc in our world, so we're dealing with this new relationship, this new ball and chain for me, and her sort of indentured servitude to me and then also these outside forces. So we're not united this year. We're battling on a few fronts."
6. On seeing "True Blood" actor Joe Manganiello in the newly-released male stripper film "Magic Mike"..."I've seen Alex naked in person a couple of times now. It's a day at the office. So I got to see Joe, I went to the 'Magic Mike' premiere and he was sitting behind me. We had fun with it. He would show us some moves. He was such a good sport."
7. On the "True Blood" creator Alan Ball's upcoming departure from the series...
"I got very sentimental at the '12' table read and asked him to autograph my script. And then I got weepy. I was like, 'Oh, this is so embarrassing.'"
8. How much longer do you think a show like 'True Blood' can and will be around?
"I think around 17 years. I think so. I'm pretty sure. I picture like our last episode with the walker, our teeth falling out. Joe has a little pudge in the middle. We sit down a lot more. Vamp speed is sort of normal speed. That's sort of what I'm hoping to see. They'd have to explain why vampires are aging. It could be like a virus. But that's okay."
"I'm always speculating because it's one of those magical things that this group has come together and we all like each other and Pam is such a great role and so you watch basically it's all based on if the fans keep enjoying the show."
"I feel like, I don't want to jinx it. The universe is listening and they're a bunch of pranksters. I think as long as we're still having fun and I mean the fans too. As long as we're all feeling fresh and having fun, it'll keep going."
9. On the casting of "The Tudors" actress Sarah Bolger as Princess Aurora on season 2 of ABC's "Once Upon A Time... (Bauer Van Straten played Maleficent, the enemy of the character's parents, on the first season)
"I don't know a thing. I find everything out through usually turning on the TV. I'm like, 'Oh my God, Anna [Paquin]'s pregnant!' But I actually don't know about 'Once Upon A Time.' I went to the season finale screening. I said something like, 'So that mist, you know that mist that rolled in at the end? Because the dragon is dead. But that's a pretty magical mist, right?' And he [the executive producer] was very coy again. The producers, they don't tell us anything."
"It was so much fun. Another lovely group. It's very different form filming on 'True Blood.' It's all green screen. So you walk into a green stage. It's also an odd shade of green. I don't know whoever started this CGI thing. It's the most unattractive green. It's not good for blondes at all. But anyhoo, they give you a chair and a rug and you act all day and it's bizarre and fun."
"I loved working with Lana Parrilla. We had a ball. And Josh [Dallas] was amazing - [Prince] Charming. He had to be. My husband said, 'Was he charming?' Yeah.. (laughs) Guys like puns."Reporting by Rachel Smith, host of the KABC Television's entertainment show "On The Red Carpet" (check for local TV listings).
