Troian Bellisario talks about self-harming in Seventeen interview
"Pretty Little Liars" star Troian Bellisario is opening up about self-harming herself as a teenager.
Bellisario, who plays Spencer Hastings on the popular ABC Family drama series "Pretty Little Liars," told Seventeen magazine in an interview published in its February 2014 issue, according to People magazine, that she would deny herself food and social interaction in high school.
"I started self-harming when I was a junior," Bellisario said to Seventeen. "I would withhold food or withhold going out with my friends, based on how well I did that day in school."
The actress also opens up about her insecurities, saying she feels like a "fraud" while on the set of her hit show.
"Sometimes I feel like I'm trying too hard, like I don't belong," she said. "I just look around at Lucy [Hale], Shay [Mitchell] and Ashley [Benson], and I'm just like, 'Why am I on this show?' Sometimes I've felt like a fraud."
"I'm not like these other girls," Bellisario continued. "I don't dress like that and don't know how to do my hair. The minute I'm off the stage, I try to get as 'me' as possible. I do that by piling on my black eyeliner, and I put on my ripped tights. Dress like myself again helps."
Despite the pressure she feels, Bellisario credits her family and friends for reminding her that she is loved.
"My friends and family -- the people who I love and who love me back. Whenever I get down, when I want to crawl under a rock, I just look around at them and I see how rich my life is," she said.
"Pretty Little Liars" continues its fourth season on ABC Family on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 8 p.m. ET.
