Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails and songwriting partner Atticus Ross are set to compose the music for the U.S. film adaptation of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," following the success of their "Social Network" soundtrack.

The two earned a Golden Globe nomination for the score they produced for "The Social Network." Both films are directed by David Fincher and star Rooney Mara.

"The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" is based on the first of the "Millennium" trilogy of crime novels by Swedish author Stieg Larsson and is set for release on Dec. 21, 2011.

"Happy to announce that for the last month or so we've been scoring "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,'" Reznor told the New York Times for its videotaped "TimeTalks" series."Atticus and I are going to work on this together again. We sent them two hours of music."

"We started recording things in a different way," he added. "It was all based on performance. Nothing programmed and that would be my limited skills at string instruments. We'd process them in a way that really gave it an interesting, organic feel that felt like something we've never done before."

In "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," Lisbeth Salander, a superhacker, private investigator and rape survivor, helps Mikael Blomkvist, an investigative journalist, tackle a freelance assignment by an elderly businessman who wants to find out what happened to his grand-niece.

The U.S. film stars Daniel Craig of the James Bond movie "Quantum of Solace" as Blomkvist, while Mara plays Salander. A Swedish film adaptation of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" was released in 2009.
