'Transformers: Dark of the Moon' earns third-best box office debut ever
"Transformers: Dark of the Moon," the third movie in the franchise, scored the third-best global debut at the box office this weekend to land in first place, earning an estimated $372 million.
The Paramount flick, which stars Shia LaBeouf and Victoria's Secret model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, took in $162 million domestically in the weekend box office, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The movie had an estimated production budget of $195 million.
"Dark of the Moon" earned the third best worldwide debut of all time, behind "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," which grossed $394 million and "Spider-Man 3," which earned $382 million. The third movie in the "Transformers" franchise did break another box office record, it earned the best domestic July 4th weekend opening ever, earning $97.4 million in three days.
The industry paper estimates that "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" might go on to earn $180.8 million domestically and up to $405.8 million worldwide during the 4th of July weekend. "Dark of the Moon" is earning 60 percent of its grosses from 3D theaters. The previous installments, "Transformers" and "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" grossed $155.4 million and $200.1 million, respectively in their six-day debuts.
"Transformers: Dark of the Moon" depicts a fictional account of what happens when it is revealed that a Apollo 11 moon landing mission in 1969 had found a wrecked alien robot spacecraft with no survivors during a secret mission on the dark side of the moon, confirming that mankind is not alone in the universe.
The Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts romantic comedy "Larry Crowne" didn't meet box office expectations, grossing an estimated $13 million through Sunday in theaters, landing behind "Transformers" and holdovers "Cars 2" and "Bad Teacher." In the No. 5 spot was Selena Gomez's "Monte Carlo," which grossed $7.6 million through Sunday.
Meanwhile, "Cars 2" nabbed second place on Friday, earning an estimated $25.1 million through Sunday for a domestic cume of $116 million.
"Bad Teacher" landed in third place, earning an estimated $14.1 million through Sunday with a domestic cume of $59.5 million in its second weekend.
