The 2013 Tony Awards will air live from Radio City Music Hall in New York City on CBS on June 9 at 8 p.m. ET and the nominees have been announced.

The new musical "Kinky Boots," by singer Cyndi Lauper and Broadway veteran Harvey Fierstein, leads with 13 nominations, including one for Best Musical. The show is based on a 2005 film and is about a a struggling shoe factory owner who saves his family's business with the help of a drag queen.

Tom Hanks also received his first Tony nod -- for his Broadway debut. He plays a Pulitzer Prize-winning tabloid reporter, the leading role, in Nora Ephron's "The Lucky Guy," which was nominated for Best Play and earned a total of six nominations overall. Ephron died at age 71 on June 26, 2012 after battling cancer.

When asked how he thought Ephron would have received the nominations, Hanks told the Wall Street Journal: "I think she would have been in her way, so quietly smiling."
