Tom Hanks has revealed that he has type 2 diabetes -- and maintains a good sense of humor about it.

The 57-year-old actor made his comments on "The Late Show with David Letterman" on Monday night, Oct. 7, after host David Letterman commented he looks "wonderful" and "like a kid."

"I've been maintaining the temple, Dave," Hanks said. "I went to the doctor and he said, 'You know those high blood sugar numbers you've been dealing with since you were 36? Well, you've graduated. You've got type 2 diabetes, young man.'"

"It's controllable," the actor added. "You know, something's gonna kill us all, Dave. Something's gonna kill us all."

Diet, exercise and medications, including insulin injections in severe cases, are often used to control type 2 diabetes, also known as adult-onset diabetes, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. The ailment, is more common than type 1 diabetes, which is an autoimmune disease and is more common among overweight people, although those who are thin can also be affected.

"Good for you and congratulations," Letterman joked.

"Thank you," Hanks replied.

Letterman said he too suffers "from the high blood sugar" and maintains a "special diet."

"My doctor said, 'Look, if you can weigh as much as you weighed in high school, you will, essentially, be completely healthy and will not have type 2 Diabetes.' And then I said to her, 'Well, I'm gonna have type 2 Diabetes because there is no way I can weigh as much as I did in high school," Hanks said, adding: "I weighed 96 pounds in high school and I was a very skinny boy."

"And you know, most of that was that big, white afro that I wore back in the '70s," he joked.

Hanks appeared on the show to promote his new film, "Captain Phillips." He plays the title character in the film, which is based on the true story of an American whose cargo ship was hijacked by Somali pirates in 2009. The movie is set for release on Friday, Oct. 11.
