Julia Roberts and other cast members of "Larry Crowne" agreed that their co-star Tom Hanks, who also helmed the film, made the set a joyful place to work.

"I think part of the director's job, if the movie is meant to be something other than cynical and dour, is to host a good party of a movie," Hanks told OnTheRedCarpet.com special correspondent George Pennacchio of KABC Television at the film's recent Hollywood premiere. "You want interesting people to have great conversation, you want everybody to look forward to coming to do the work, so they can relax and have a blast, cause quite frankly, the movie is supposed to be a blast."

Julia Roberts agreed that "It was a happy set," adding: "Your boss really creates that experience, and so to work for someone who really values people's happiness is a joy."

In the film, which hit theaters on July 1, Hanks stars as Larry Crowne, the amiable team leader at a big-box company where he's worked since his time in the Navy. After being downsized, Crowne enrolls at his local community college, joins a scooter gang and develops a crush on his public-speaking teacher (Roberts).

The movie also featured "Star Trek" actor George Takei, who played the college's economics professor.

"[Hanks] loves everybody on the set," Takei said of his co-star and director. "His energy is so infectious."

Hanks was equally enthusiastic of Takei, praising the 74-year-old actor profusely.

"And George [Takei] - he's more fun than Mr. Microphone, I mean there's not anybody who doesn't love George. We had probably 140 atmosphere, you know, dress extras who were making up his economics class and when he would come in, all of their faces would just light up! They couldn't believe they were in the same room as George Takei!"

Hanks, who arrived at the premiere on a Yamaha scooter, was all smiles at the premiere, which he attended with his wife Rita Wilson.

"I don't think there's anything we can give up by having a good time," Hanks continued. "I went around the world on this bad boy. We crossed the international dateline. I left Singapore and came back two hours later on the same day. That's how goofy the time space matrix was on the press tour for 'Larry Crowne.' But we had a good time. I love the movie, so it's not work. It's not nearly the contractual obligation that I read about."

Hanks recently revealed that he will be reprising his role as Woody in the Disney and Pixar movie, "Toy Story 4."
