Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes to divorce after 5 years

Tom Cruise, 49, and Katie Holmes, 33, are getting a divorce, Holmes' attorney confirmed to OnTheRedCarpet.com on June 29, 2012. "This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family," Holmes's publicist Leslie Sloane said in a statement obtained by OnTheRedCarpet.com. "Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest." Cruise's longtime entertainment attorney told OnTheRedCarpet.com's parent company ABC News, "Katie Holmes did file for divorce yesterday. Tom Cruise is saddened by this news but is concentrating on his children." The couple, one of the most famous Hollywood pairs, was often dubbed "TomKat." Cruise and Holmes wed in a Scientology ceremony at an Italian castle in November 2006. They have one 6-year-old daughter named Suri. Holmes filed divorce papers in New York on June 28 and is seeking "sole custody of Suri," a source told ABC News, adding that the filing was a "complete surprise" to the actor. This was Holmes' first marriage and Cruise's third - he was previously married to actress Mimi Rogers between 1987 and 1990 and to actress Nicole Kidman, who he wed in December of that year. The two divorced in 2001 and have two adopted children. - Isabella, 19, and his son Connor, 17. Coincidentally, all three of Cruise's ex-wives filed for divorce when they were 33-years-old. Cruise and Holmes began dating in 2005. In May of that year, the actor declared his love for her on an episode of 'The Oprah Winfrey Show,' which saw him jumping up and down on the talk show host's couch. The incident made international headlines and spurred a slew of online memes and spoof videos. Holmes is best known for her role as Joey Potter in "Dawson's Creek." She has also appeared in films like "Jack and Jill," "The Romantics," "Batman Begins" and "Pieces of April." She was engaged for two years to "American Pie" actor Chris Klein. Cruise is known for roles in films like "Top Gun," "Mission Impossible" and "Minority Report." He has been nominated for three Oscars and most recently starred in the rock musical, "Rock of Ages."
