Tom Arnold: How I lost 89 pounds (Photo)
Tom Arnold is starting the New Year healthier and lighter, dropping 89 pounds since the birth of his son, Jax, in April.
Arnold, who weighed as much as 287 at his heaviest, shows off his slimmed-down body in People magazine's "Half Their Size" issue, on newsstands Friday, Jan. 3. The actor reveals that after struggling with overeating and depression, he wanted to get healthy in order to live a longer life for his son.
"I can tuck my shirt in," Arnold said. "Something inside of me changed. I knew I needed to live as long as I could."
At one point in his struggles, Arnold was consuming an unhealthy amount of food. The actor recalls eating six-egg omelets with cheese, six turkey sausage links and oatmeal for breakfasts, as well as consuming an extra-large meat pizza with cheese-dipped breadsticks for dinner and up to 15 diet sodas a day. He has now given up carbohydrates and sweets in favor of cardio, circuit-training and abdominal exercises.
Arnold, who is 6-foot-2, also says he would have tailors come and custom fit his suits for when he increased in weight size to avoid dealing with his issues.
"There was a lot of shame," Arnold said. "One time I had a tailor come over and sew the weights into my suits -- this is what you wear when you are 210, 220, 240, 300. That saved me the time of going into my closet and getting upset and frustrated."
The turning point for the actor was the birth of his son Jax earlier this year, who after enduring years of infertility issues with wife Ashley, he realized he needed to make a change.
"The moment I saw [Jax] I realized he deserves the best," Arnold said. "I have tons more energy to play with my son."
