Actor Tim Robbins released his debut album, "Tim Robbins and the Rogues Gallery Band," on Tuesday, July 19 and also recently began a North American tour.

The 52-year-old, who won an Oscar for his role in the 2003 film "Mystic River" and is also known for movies such as the 1994 drama "The Shawshank Redemption," has been writing and performing folk rock songs for years.

His father, Gilbert Robbins, was a folk singer in the band The Highwaymen in the 1960s and managed the Gaslight Cafe, a popular music venue in New York City. He died in April at age 80 after battling prostate cancer.

"My first desire to perform came from watching him on stage," Tim Robbins said in a statement published by his record company, 429 Records, and obtained by OnTheRedCarpet.com. "I remember it as so intoxicating. Audiences were encouraged to sing along and be part of the event. That is a relationship I've been seeking all my life, that alchemy between performer and audience."

Tim Robbins and the Rogues Gallery Band have performed in public before in places such as the United Kingdom and Australia. Robbins has also been a guest performer at Pearl Jam concerts in the United States (see videos below).

Meanwhile, Tim Robbins is also continuing his acting career. He recently starred in the blockbuster "Green Lantern" opposite Ryan Reynolds and is set to film two more movies in 2012 - the baseball drama "Keeper of the Pinstripes," and "Thanks for Sharing," a comedy that tells of a sex addicts' support group and also stars Mark Ruffalo.
