Tim McGraw talks sobriety and getting healthy

02/01/2013 by Kristina Lopez

Tim McGraw's hard drinking days are behind him, according to a new interview where the country singer and actor talked about his path to sobriety and getting healthy.

McGraw, 45, appears on the cover of People magazine's new issue and reveals he felt that giving up alcohol was something "I needed to do."

"I drank a lot from my point of view and I needed to stop," McGraw told the magazine, which became available on Friday, February 1. "I felt quitting was something I needed to do. I didn't feel I had any moral high ground with my kids in the long run."

McGraw previously told OTRC.com that he gave up alcohol around early 2008 and joked that he would get in trouble with wife Faith Hill when she would call and found out he had been drinking.

"I just learned how to text," McGraw said while promoting "Country Strong" in 2011. "I only learned how to text because back when I was drinking, I would get in trouble when I called my wife - she'd find out I was drinking."

"Then I started slurring my texts and I figured, 'Hell, I've got to quit drinking,'" he added. "That's the only thing that's going to work. And Skype, thank god, nobody knew anything about Skype back then."

McGraw and Hill, who wed in October 1996, have three daughters together including 15-year-old Gracie Katherine, 14-year-old Maggie Elizabeth and 11-year-old Audrey Caroline. The singer, who is sporting a leaner frame after substituting his drinking habit for the gym, is also getting ready to release a new album called "Two Lanes of Freedom" on February 5 and will promote the album on a 30-city tour in the spring.

"I'm in a good place right now," McGraw told People. "I really feel like this new album is not a culmination of the things I've done, it's a new beginning of the things I am going to do. I want to enjoy my career and having my family. I have a busy life, but it is a fulfilling life."

The singer also appeared on "Good Morning America" on Friday and sang "One of Those Nights" from his new album. Check out his performance below.
