Tim Gunn says he attempted suicide as a teen - see video
Tim Gunn of the fashion reality series Project Runway says he tried to commit suicide when he was a teenager and urges those thinking about taking their own life to seek help, in comments made in a video for The Trevor Project.
The group offers suicide prevention assistance aimed at gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth.Gunn, who is openly gay, is one of several celebrities who have recorded messages of support following recent suicides by homosexual male teenagers who were bullied by their peers. Tyler Clementi, 18, jumped to his death from a bridge on September 22 after his roommate posted on the Internet a video of him being intimate with another man.
"As a 17-year-old youth who was in quite a bit of despair, I attempted to kill myself and I'm very happy today that that attempt was unsuccessful but at the time, it's all that I could contemplate," Gunn said.
"I woke up the next morning after taking more than 100 pills," he said. "I was in a whole other level of despair. I thought, 'I shouldn't be here, this isn't what was meant to be.' I frankly just wanted to start live all over again. It took a very serious intervention to help me."
Other stars who have recorded messages of support on the issue of bullying and teen suicide include Anne Hathaway, Vampire Diaries stars Ian Somerhalder, Candice Accola and Katerina Graham, No Ordinary Family's Julie Benz and Michael Chiklis and Rex Lee of Entourage.
