Jack White and Meg White, the Detroit rock duo behind The White Stripes, announced on Wednesday that they are splitting up and "will make no further new recordings or perform live," according to a statement on the band's official website, which has been down at the time of this writing.

"The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health," statement said. "It's for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way."

The White Stripes' last recording was the live album "Under the Great White Northern Lights," released last year. However, the statement indicates that it might not be the last bit of music fans will hear from the band.

"Third Man Records will continue to put out unreleased live and studio recordings from the White Stripes in their Vault subscription record club, as well as through regular channels," the statement said.

Jack White has had a few other projects over the last few years including the Raconteurs and the Dead Weather. He also has his Nashville based Third Man Records.

The group formed in 1997 in Detroit, Michigan with singer-songwriter Jack White and his ex-wife Meg White. The band has won five Grammy awards, and five MTV Video Music Awards.

The statement ends with a message for fans that reads, "The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful."
