The season finale of AMC's new series "The Walking Dead", based off a graphic novel of the same name about a zombie apocalypse, was watched by 6 million people, marking a new high for the show.

Four million of them were aged between 18 and 49 - the target audience of the hit series, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The second season is expected to air in October 2011. The premiere of "The Walking Dead" nabbed 5.3 million viewers to become the most-watched premiere for the cable network.

Executive producer Gale Anne Hurd has said many of the stars will return for season two.
