"The Possession" ruled Friday's box office with $6.1 million, beating out "Lawless," which earned $2.8 million.

The Lionsgate horror film is expected to earn up to $20 million during the long Labor Day weekend. Last year's Labor Day box office thrived with the release of the Oscar-winning film "The Help."

In "The Possession," Natasha Calis stars as Em, a young girl who buys an antique box at a yard sale with Hebrew inscriptions engraved on it and then becomes possessed by a demon. Her father Clyde (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and her mother Stephanie (Kyra Sedgwick), his soon-to-be-ex-wife try to save her, with the help of a Hasidic Jewish man, portrayed by alternative rock musician Matisyahu.

"Lawless," which was produced by The Weinstein Company landed in the No. 2 spot in the box office, earning $2.8 million on Friday. The film, which was released on August 29, is expected to earn up to $12.4 million over the three-day weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"Lawless" is set in Virginia during the Prohibition era. Shia LaBeouf stars as the youngest brother of Forrest and Howard Bondurant, played by British actor Tom Hardy and Jason Clarke.

The three run a bootlegging business that comes under threat by local authorities. Guy Pearce stars as Special Agent Charlie Rakes, while Jessica Chastain plays Forrest's love interest. Meanwhile, LaBeouf's character romances a preacher's daughter named Bertha, played by Mia Wasikowska.

Landing in third on the box office charts was "The Expendables 2," followed by "The Bourne Legacy," which earned $2.2 million and $1.8 million respectively.
