'The Newsroom' renewed for final season 3 by HBO
Get ready for more office meltdowns, flaring tempers, wordy but entertaining arguments and maybe ... a wedding? And then "The Newsroom" will sign off.
Aaron Sorkin's series has been renewed for a third and final season, HBO announced on Jan. 13. The show stars Jeff Daniels as egotistical but brilliant cable news anchor Will McAvoy and Emily Mortimer as his on-again, off-again love interest MacKenzie "Mac" McHale.
Fans of the show particularly enjoy following the angst-filled relationships of Will and Mac, Maggie and Jim (played by Allison Pill and John Gallagher, Jr.) and Sloan and Don (played by Olivia Munn and Thomas Sadoski). Season 2 ended with a proposal and a kiss.
Season 3 of "The Newsroom" will debut in the fall, said Michael Lombardo, president of HBO programming.
"The Newsroom" is classic Aaron Sorkin -- smart, riveting and thought-provoking," he said in a statement obtained by OTRC.com. "I'm sure this farewell season will be one to remember."
Daniels won an Emmy for his role on the show, whose second season ended in September. The finale was watched by 1.67 million viewers and earned a 0.7 rating among adults between ages 18 and 49, marking a decrease from its season premiere, which was watched by 2.22 million people and earned a 0.9 rating.
