'The Hunger Games' poster is released - and it's animated!
A new film adaptation of a popular young adult novel aims to take the blockbuster crown, now that the "Harry Potter" franchise had its final film hit the box office on July 15 and "The Twilight Saga" will wrap up in 2012.
"The Hunger Games" is quickly building buzz and on Tuesday, Lionsgate, the studio behind the film, released the first poster for the motion picture - and it's animated!
The poster, which can be seen below, features the mocking jay pin on fire. The film adaptation of the popular novel by Suzanne Collins will hit theaters on March 23, 2012.
"The Hunger Games" is the first book in the trilogy of novels based around the character Katniss Everdeen, who will be played by "Winter's Bone" actress Jennifer Lawrence.
Everdeen lives in the post-apocalyptic North America, which is now called Panem. In the book, the Hunger Games are an annual televised event put on by the government in Capitol city, where a boy and a girl from each district fight to the death.
It was previously reported that Lionsgate is considering turning the three books in the series in to four films for the silver screen, just like the "Harry Potter" and "Twilight" franchises. However, the plan is not set and the book that would be split into two films was never specified.
It was announced in May that Donald Sutherland had joined the ever-growing cast of the film. The actor is set to play President Snow in the film adaptation of the popular young adult novels written by Suzanne Collins. Sutherland's character is described as a "cruel and ruthless" leader who has "a contentious relationship" with the film's protagonist Everdeen.
Rocker Lenny Kravitz was announced as a cast member last week. The musician will play Cinna, a "mild-mannered" first time stylist whose designs are "show-stopping." He's the stylist assigned to Everdeen for the lead up to the Hunger Games, a televised event that sees a boy and a girl from different districts fight each other to the death, film studio Lionsgate said.
Woody Harrelson was recently confirmed to play the character of Haymitch Abernathy, Everdeen's mentor.
Others who have been cast in "The Hunger Games" include Stanley Tucci as Caesar Flickerman, the "upbeat" host of the Hunger Games, Wes Bentley of "American Beauty," who will play head game mastermind Seneca Crame, Elizabeth Banks, who will take on the role of Effie Trinket and Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth, who portray Peeta Mellark and Gale Hawthorne, who compete for Everdeen's affections.
Jack Quaid, the son of actors Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan, Leven Rambin, Dayo Okeniyi, Amanda Stenberg, Jeremy Marinas and Dakota Hood have also been linked to the movie.
