'The Hunger Games' finale 'Mockingjay' to be split into two films

07/10/2012 by Kristina Lopez

Just like the "Harry Potter" franchise and "The Twilight Saga" franchise, "The Hunger Games" franchise finale will be two films.

Lionsgate Films announced on July 10 that the final book in the franchise, "Mockingjay," will hit the big-screen in two parts, with the first one set for release in 2014.

"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1" will be released Nov. 21, 2014, and "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2" will follow on Nov. 20, 2015, according to The Associated Press.

Filmmakers are already gearing up to film the sequel to "The Hunger Games," called "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire." It was announced on July 9 that Phillip Seymour Hoffman has been cast in a key role.

Warning: Book spoilers ahead!

In "Catching Fire," Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) must return to The Hunger Games arena for the Quarter Quell, a special event in Panem which commemorates The Hunger Games every 25 years. For the 75th Hunger Games and the third Quarter Quell, two former winning tributes (victors) from each district from previous Hunger Games must return to the arena and battle to the death again.

"Donnie Darko" actress Jenna Malone is in talks to portray Johanna Mason, a tribute that Katniss and Peeta face off against in the Quarter Quell.

Meanwhile, Francis Lawrence is taking over directing duties for "Catching Fire" after "The Hunger Games" director Gary Ross dropped out due to time constraints.

"The Hunger Games" debuted last March and has taken in $404 million domestically and $678 million worldwide.

"Catching Fire," based on the second book in Suzanne Collins' hugely popular "Hunger Games" trilogy, is set for release on Nov. 22, 2013.
