'The Avengers' earns $207.4 million in opening weekend, breaks box office record

"The Avengers" continues to dominate the U.S. box office and has broken a new record.

The Disney and Marvel Studios blockbuster had the biggest three-day debut at the domestic box office, with $200.3 million earned since its Friday midnight opening, with higher-than-expected profits on Sunday that puts its estimated total at $207.4 million.

The movie, which sees Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man teaming up with fellow superheroes such as Thor, The Black Widow and Captain America to try to take down the evil villain Loki, beat the record "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2" held for a largest U.S. box office opening - $169.2 million.

"The Avengers," which had an estimated $220 million production budget, has already made $447.4 million overseas, where it was released a week ago in various formats, including IMAX 4D. The movie has raked in a total of $654.8 million.

In second place at the U.S. box office is the romantic comedy movie "Think Like A Man," which was No. 1 last week. The film, which stars en ensemble cast that includes Kevin Hart and Gabrielle Union, made an estimated $8 million over the weekend, bringing its total domestic earnings to $73 million since its April 20 release.

The sci-fi blockbuster "The Hunger Games," starring Jennifer Lawrence as a teenage fighter forces to battle to the death in a televised arena to help her people, comes it at No. 3. It raked in $5.7 million domestically over the weekend and has earned $380.7 million at home since its March 23 release and a total of $617.7 million overall.

The romantic drama "The Lucky One" is in fourth place at the U.S. box office. Over the weekend, it made $5.51 million, bringing its total earnings, domestic and foreign, since its April 20 release to $65.9 million.

In fifth place is the animated film "The Pirates! Band of Misfits," with $5.4 million earned domestically over the weekend. The movie, which stars Hugh Grant, Morgan Freeman and Salma Hayek, It has made at least $88.9 million at home and abroad since its April 27 release.
