The first "Avengers," which was released this past May, quickly gained a cult following and achieved box office success, making its mark as the third highest grossing film of all time.
Domestically, "The Avengers" earned $617 million, while the film made another $844 million abroad. Overall, the summer blockbuster earned $1.4 billion dollars worldwide.
The film was directed and written by Joss Whedon and featured stars such as Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson.
Walt Disney Studios said in a statement to OnTheRedCarpet.com that Whedon will also direct and write the script for the second "Avengers" film.
"Robert Downey Jr. sustained an ankle injury on the set of 'Iron Man 3' in Wilmington, North Carolina while performing a stunt," a Walt Disney Studios spokesperson said in a statement to OnTheRedCarpet.com on Thursday. "There will be a short delay in the production schedule while he recuperates."
