Taylor Swift invites cancer patient fan to ACM Awards (Video)
Taylor Swift had to turn down an invite to prom with 18-year-old fan Kevin McGuire, who's battling leukemia, but the singer had an even better proposal.
"Kevin, I'm so sorry but I won't be able to make it to your prom," Swift wrote on Facebook page on Friday. "But I was wondering, the ACM Awards are coming up. Would you be my date? Love, Taylor."
McGuire responded to the 22-year-old singer's invitation telling Philadelphia's local CBS affiliate, "I don't know what else to say... I was just trying not to throw up."
"I have cancer. Cancer doesn't have me." McGuire continued. "Taylor, I would love to go with you."
McGuire, who is a varsity football player in Somerdale, N.J., has his sister to thank for the honor of a date with Swift. His older sister Tori started a Facebook campaign called "Taylor Swift take KEVIN MCGUIRE TO PROM," which attracted over 90,000 fans.
Her brother was diagnosed with leukemia when he was 13 years old and after years of chemotherapy, spinal taps and screenings, was declared to be free of cancer in April 2010. Unfortunately, McGuire suffered a relapse and is now battling cancer for the second time.
"Kevin is the kindest, most noble 18 year old a person could even fathom meeting," Tori McGuire wrote on the group's page. "Throughout his ups and downs Kevin never even questioned 'why me?' Nothing, and I mean NOTHING brightens Kevin's day more than Taylor Swift."
Swift is up for three awards at the 47th annual Academy of Country Music Awards, including Entertainer of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year and Video of the Year for her 2011 song, "Mean."
Swift recently performed at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards, taking home the awards for Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance for "Mean."
The 2012 Academy of Country Music Awards are scheduled to be held in Las Vegas on Sunday, April 1st and will air at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
