Taylor Kitsch on 'John Carter': 'It's gonna be a ride' - See video
Taylor Kitsch promises that audiences are in for something special with "John Carter."
"It's gonna be a ride," Kitsch told OnTheRedCarpet.com at the film's premiere. "An emotional one and a character driven one."
Based on the first novel "Princess of Mars" in the 11-volume book series by Edgar Rice Burroughs, "John Carter" tells the story of a former Confederate captain named John Cater (Kitsch) who is transported to Mars. Willem Dafoe plays Tars Tarkas, a leader of an alien race and Lynn Collins plays Princess Dejah, Carter's love interest. The book series was, in part, the inspiration for "Star Wars."
The film also stars Samantha Morton, Thomas Haden Church, Mark Strong, Dominic West and Bryan Cranston.
A big part of "John Carter" is the special effects which detail everything from different environments on the planet to several species of creatures. "Obviously the effects speak for themselves but you know the core of 'JC' is about a guy that's lost his cause that basically gets a second chance so, it's gonna be a good one," Kitsch said.
"You need a guy that's truly broken. He's trying to make the right decision and paying the ultimate price in that and loses his family. I think the second chances... He never truly wavered from the honor that's within him so I think that's a big thing that people can take," the actor said about his character. "He's truly an everyday guy, you know? And I love that part of Carter. He's an everyday guy put in extraordinary circumstances and that's probably the most endearing quality about him."
Kitsch also revealed what he was thinking when filming the difficult stunt scenes. "'Can't wait to have a shower and nap,' that's what is going through my head," he joked. "It was truly exhausting for me and I think it's true when they say, 'What you put in is what you get out' and I think you guys are going to feel the energy of that on-screen."
"John Carter" is the live-action debut of director and writer Andrew Stanton, who is the mastermind behind Pixar's "WALL-E" and "Finding Nemo." The action film is set to hit theaters in 2D, Digital 3D and IMAX 3D.
"John Carter" is slated for release on March 9, 2012. Watch the trailer below.
