Steven Quale says he borrowed 'Avatar' technology for 'Final Destination 5' (Video)
Director Steven Quale is no stranger to the horror drama, but he told OnTheRedCarpet.com that it was working on movies like "Titanic" and "Avatar" that inspired him in making "Final Destination 5."
"It's really fun, we went into the project wanting to elevate all aspects of it and I think we succeeded tonight," Quale told OnTheRedCarpet.com co-host Chris Balish at the film's Hollywood premiere. "All the years that I've worked with Jim [James] Cameron on both 'Avatar' and 'Titanic,' I've been able to use all of those tricks and really economize that and make it into a really amazing spectacle - particularly with the 3D. I'm very happy with the way the 3D ended up and the fans have totally agreed with me."
In the fifth installment of the successful horror franchise, which hit theaters on August 12, survivors from a suspension-bridge collapse learn that there's no way to cheat death. But there's a twist to the chapter, as the survivors now have the option of taking someone else's life in order to save their own.
The director was sure to take full advantage of 3D technology in the "grizzly death" scenes that the "Final Destination" franchise made famous.
"Because it's a horror film and you have the tension and build-up to the final horrific execution of some grizzly death," Quale explained. "You can milk it with the audience and the 3D gives you the opportunity to do things that envelops the audience in the slow build-up and then you have a really horrific visual demise of the people. That combination of the slow build-up and the tension, sort of the tricks that Hitchcock was famous for, but being able to do it in 3-D just elevates it to a new level."
Quale worked as The Second Unit Director on both "Titanic" and "Avatar." He also took over as the Visual Effects Supervisor in "Avatar," which won an Oscar for Best Achievement in Visual Effects.
He has also had a hand in films like "The Haunted Mansion," "The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle" and "True Lies."
