Get ready to hear Bill from "True Blood" singing "Edelweiss."

Stephen Moyer, who plays the vampire hottie on the HBO show, will play the role of Caption von Trapp (full name: Capt. Georg Von Trapp) in NBC's upcoming live holiday production of the hit musical "The Sound of Music," the network announced on Friday, Aug. 23. Carrie Underwood was last year cast as main star Maria, von Trapp's love interest, who Julie Andrews played in a popular and five-time Oscar-winning 1965 movie.

The story is based on real events. Moyer's character is a World War I verteran, widower and strict father who hires Maria as a governess for his seven children just before World War II begins and before the Nazis invade their native Austria. Maria teaches them to sing and the musical contains beloved songs such as "Do-Re-Mi" and "My Favorite Things." "Edelweiss" is an acoustic lullaby von Trapp performs.

NBC's "Sound of Music" special is set to air on Dec. 5 and will be based on the original 1959 Broadway musical, which starred Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel.

Moyer recently showcased his musical skills by playing Billy Flynn in a three-day production of "Chicago" at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles (check out an exclusive interview with Stephen Moyer!). He has also acted on stage in his native England.

Christopher Plummer played von Trapp in the 1965 film. He, Andrews and the actors who played the children reunited on a 2010 episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the movie and talked about their experience filming "The Sound of Music." Check out 15 secrest they revealed.
