'Spring Breakers' trailer: R-rated movie stars Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez (Video)
A blonde Vanessa Hudgens, a gold tooth-capped James Franco, a cover of Britney Spears' Baby One More Time," coeds in bikinis and women kissing are just some of the highlights of the upcoming raunchy R-rated action film "Spring Breakers," as seen in a trailer released on January 17.
The movie was directed by Harmony Korine and stars Hudgens, fellow Disney Channel alum Selena Gomez, "Pretty Little Liars" star Ashley Benson and the director's wife Rachel as a group of college students who get into more than just your typical spring break hijinks.
The four are sent to jail after a botched attempt to rob a restaurant to try to get some cash in order to fund their school vacation. Franco, who also sports cornrows and a dollar sign tattoo on his neck in addition to his mouth bling, plays Alien (pronounced A-leen), a drug and weapons dealer. He bails the group out and takes them on a spring break they will probably never forget.
"It was really, really fun," Gomez told OTRC.com in an April 2012 interview. "It's an independent movie and it's a little bit smaller but it's a very different role than anything I've done before. James Franco plays this character who's more of like kind of, not the villain, necessarily, but he's the one that kind of gets us into a little bit of a mess and he's just really great to work with. And Vanessa's been amazing. It was a great, great shoot."
"Spring Breakers" is rated R for strong sexual content, language, nudity and drug use and is set to be released later this year.
"Evolution, you know, as an actor, you've got to grow," Hudgens, who wears a blonde wig over her dark hair in the film, said in an interview with MTV News, which posted the trailer. If you're not growing, you're dying, in a sense so it was time to kind of shed a new skin and step into something different -- a different person's shoes, a different world. I've never done anything like this before and it was so freeing."
Hudgens rose to fame with the 2006 Disney Channel film "High School Musical," which starred her Zac Efron, who she later dated for a few years. In 2011, she took on a more mature role, playing a mental patient and prostitute -- as seen in the eyes of the main heroine, played by Emily Browning -- in Zack Snyder's movie "Sucker Punch."
Gomez, known nowadays as the former girlfriend of fellow teen pop star Justin Bieber, became famous due to her lead role in the Disney Channel series "Wizards of Waverly Place," which aired between 2007 and 2012. She has also appeared in family-friendly films such as "Ramona and Beezus" and the romantic comedy "Monte Carlo."
"Disney was my life and that's all, in a way, that's all I knew," she told MTV News. "So once that ended, I definitely think it was good for me to go to an extreme like this. That's what was so liberating about it -- I felt so safe with Harmony, I felt so safe with the girls and I was really able to push myself to places I didn't even know I could go."
